3) First look at the Ethiopian Church

 نظرة أولى على الكنيسة الحبشية

 

I went to Ethiopia at the time of the Holy Great Lent, and it is a very Holy time for the Orthodox Church in general, and the Ethiopian Orthodox especially..  And there are some things I noticed throughout my visits to some Orthodox Ethiopian Tawahedo churches there..

لقد ذهبت إلى إثيوبيا في فترة الصوم الكبير، وهي فترة مقدسة جداً في الكنيسة الأرثوذكسية عامة، والأرثوذكسيين الإثيوبيين خاصة..  وهناك بعض الملاحظات الجميلة التي لاحظتها في زياراتي لبعض الكنائس الأرثوذكسية التوحيدية هناك..

You will find the church not full with people!!  I mean inside!  You will find lots more of worshipers by the gates of the church, at the walls, in the enclosure area of the church..  Feeling unworthy to go inside the church..  Waiting outside, and listening to prayers through a microphone..  They pray and prostrate (make Metania) and lift there hands to the Lord in reverence and humility inside the church..  Wrapped with a white cloth (called Gabe), or a Gabe with a different color with a beautiful way..  And all the women covering their hair at the church..

 

ستجد الكنيسة ليست ممتلئة بالناس!!  أقصد داخل الكنيسة!  فترى كمية ضخمة من المتعبدين والمصلين على أبواب الكنيسة، وفي الحوش ومحيطين بأسوار الكنيسة كلها..  شاعرين بعدم استحقاقهم بدخول الكنيسة..  ويقومون بسماع الصلاة من خلال ميكروفون..  ويقومون بالصلاة والسجود ورفع اليد في تضرع أمام الله في أراضي الكنيسة..  وهم ملتحفون بالشال الأبيض (واسمه جابي) أو غيره من الألوان بطريقة جميلة..  وجميع النساء يغطون شعور رؤوسهن في الكنيسة..

Also we noticed that they take off their shoes outside the Church building, and not only inside the Holy Altar..  You will find many of the elders, women and men, leaning on a wooden stick that has the shape of a “T”, and it is derived from the time of the Ethiopian Saint Yared.

وأيضاً نلاحظ أنهم يقومون بخلع الأحذية خارج مبنى الكنيسة كله، وليس عند دخول الهيكل فقط..  وتجد كثير من المسنين، نساءً ورجالاً يتكئون على عصاة خشبية على حرف تي T.  وهي مأخوذة من قصة القديس يارد الحبشي.

 

Inside the Ethiopian churches, you will see very pictures and icons..  Very effective and significant..  My eyes were always looking for the icons of our great beloved Saint Teklehaimanot..  He is the one that brought us to this Holy lands..  And He is the one leading His people at His church in Alexandria, Egypt..

وداخل الكنائس الحبشية، الصور والأيقونات رائعة الجمال..  ومؤثرة ومعبرة جداً..  وكانت أعيننا دائماً تبحث عن صور قديسنا العظيم الأنبا تكلا هيمانوت الحبشي القس..  فهو الذي أتى بنا إلى هذه الأرض المباركة..  وهو الذي يقودنا في طريق الحياة لشعب كنيسته بالإسكندرية..

This was the first Ethiopian Church I visit, and it is Kedist Mariam Church in Arat Kilo (the 4^th Kilo), and it is in the area of the Ethiopian Patriarchate, the Chair of Abuna Paulos, Patriarch of Ethiopia, and it has an Ethiopian museum, and an exhibition arranged especially for the Ethiopian Millennium (which is now 2008 – or Ethiopian 2000), I’ll try to visit it before the ending of the visit of Pope Shenouda III to Ethiopia.  Inside the Church we took many digital photos for the frescos at the walls of the Church, and around the dome of the Church..  Of which are icons for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ – The Wedding at Cana – Icons with St. Joseph the Carpenter – The Holy Family in Egypt – The Holy Trinity (a famous icon at the Ethiopian tradition, but our Coptic Orthodox Church doesn’t approve of  depicting the Holy Trinity as three different characters), and around them the 24 elders – icon of Archangel Gabriel with the three boys at the oven of fire – Saint TaklaHimanot – The Last Supper – St. George – The Crucifixion – The Pentecost – Judgment Day – The Death of St. Mary – Assumption of St. Mariam’s Body.. etc.  (You can see photos of this Church at the Ethiopian Churches section here at St. Takla . org website).

وكانت هذه هي أول كنيسة حبشية أزورها، وهي كنيسة القديسة مريم العذراء في أرات كيلو Arat Kilo (أي الكيلو الرابع)، وهي المنطقة الموجود فيها مبنى البطريركية الحبشية، ومقر الأب البطريرك أبونا باولص، ومتحف حبشي، ومعرض تم عمله في فترة الألفية الحبشية الثانية (وهي حالياً عام 2008 – أو 2000 بالحبشي)، سأحاول زيارته قبل انتهاء فترة زيارة البابا شنوده.  وداخل الكنيسة قمنا بتصور كثير من الأيقونات الفريسكو الموجودة على الحوائط، وناحية قبة الكنيسة..  منها صور قيامة السيد المسيح – عُرس قانا الجليل – صور مع يوسف النجار – رحلة العائلة المقدسة إلى أرض مصر – صورة مشهورة في التقليد الحبشي تصور الثالوث القدوس (وكنيستنا القبطية لا توافق على تصوير الثالوث القدوس كشخصيات منفصلة) ويحيط بهم الأربعة والعشرون قسيساً – أيقونة الملاك جبرائيل مع الثلاثة فتية في أتون النار – أيقونة القديس تكلا هيمانوت – أيقونة العشاء الأخير – أيقونة مارجرجس – صلبوت المسيح – حلول الروح القدس – الدينونة – نياحة العذراء مريم – صعود جسد القديسة مريم..  (سوف تجد صور من هذه الكنيسة في قسم الكنائس الإثيوبية (الكنائس الحبشية) هنا في موقع القديس تكلاهيمانوت).

 

Because of the tough economical situations of the country, you find lots of poor people at the gates of the church and in the streets, and some sellers..

وبسبب الظروف الاقتصادية الصعبة في البلاد، تجد كثير من الفقراء على أبواب الكنائس وفي الشوارع، أو باعة جائلين..
