55) Islam in Egypt VS Christianity in Ethiopia!
!الإسلام في مصر، والمسيحية في إثيوبيا
I noticed a weird thing.. That Christianity in Ethiopia has lots in common with what happens with Islam in Egypt! For example you find beggars begging on the name of some saints.. or one hold a picture of St. Mary while asking for money.. You find many Taxis, cars, busses has pictures of Jesus Christ, Virgin Mary, or any of the saints, and verses from the Holy Bible in Amharic Language..
لاحظت أمراً غريباً.. أن المسيحية هنا في إثيوبيا بها الكثير من العادات التي تحدث مع الإسلام في مصر! مثلاً تجد بعض الشحاذين يتلفظون بأسماء القديسين أو غيره.. أو يمسك أحدهم صورة السيدة العذراء وهو يستعطي.. وتجد كثير من الأتوبيسات والتاكسيات والعربات وبها صور السيد المسيح والعذراء والقديسين وآيات من الكتاب المقدس باللغة الأمهرية..

Shops also have the same thing, even butcheries! If the owner is Christian, he’ll put a big cross, and a half-moon if Muslim! This is butchered by the Islamic way, but the other on a different way!!
أيضاً المحلات لا تخلو من نفس الأمر، حتى محلات الجزارة! فمَن كان صاحبه مسيحي يضع صليباً، أو مسلماً فيضع هلالاً! فهذا ذُبِح على الطريقة الإسلامية، أما ذاك فذبح بطريقة أخرى!!
The most vexing thing is microphones of religious organizations! In Egypt you find each and every mosque putting microphones in many directions, with a ‘high’ volume somehow, (although this has lessened to a great extent)! But here in Ethiopia, you find that Churches do the same way! Which can be really annoying, specially for those inhabitants around such organizations.. It is not good, nor healthy, whether from this side, or from the other side.. Spiritual teachings or prayers are not to be forced on people.. Even God doesn’t force Himself over people.. But He puts His commandments for them, and you have the choice to obey or refuse them.. As the Book says: “God made man from the beginning, and left him in the hand of his own counsel. He added his commandments and precepts. If thou wilt keep the commandments and perform acceptable fidelity for ever, they shall preserve thee. He hath set water and fire before thee: stretch forth thy hand to which thou wilt. Before man is life and death, good and evil, that which he shall choose shall be given unto him” (Book of Jesus Son of Seira 15: 14-18).
أما الأمر الأصعب، فهو الميكريفونات في الهيئات الدينية! ففي مصر تجد جميع الجوامع تضع مكبرات الصوت في إتجاهات عدة، وبدرجة صوت "مرتفعة" إلى حد ما، (على الرغم من أن هذا بدأ يقل هنا في مصر نوعاً ما)! أما هنا في إثيوبيا، تجد أيضاً الكنائس تتبنى هذا الأسلوب! مما قد يصبح إزعاجاً حقيقياً، وخاصة لمَنْ هم يقطنون بجوار هذه الهيئات الدينية.. هذا أمر غير سليم وغير صحي، سواء من هذا أو من ذاك.. فالتعاليم الروحية أو الصلاة لا تُفرَض على الناس.. الله ذاته لا يفرض نفسه عز وجل على الناس.. بل وضع شرائعه للناس، ولك أن تتبعها أو ترفضها.. كما يقول الكتاب: "هو صنع الإنسان في البدء، وتركه في يد اختياره. وأضاف إلى ذلك وصاياه وأوامره. فإن شئت حفظت الوصايا ووفيت مرضاته. وعرض لك النار والماء، فتمد يدك إلى ما شئت. الحياة والموت أمام الإنسان؛ فما أعجبه يُعطىَ له" (سفر يشوع بن سيراخ 15: 14-18).
(Daily) prayers on Churches use microphones, and there is a daily sermon on all Ethiopian Churches starting from 5-7 aprox., and prayers start from 2 or 3 a. m. till 10 a.m.. The Muslims Call of Prayer using microphones in Mosques starts also from 5 a. m..
الصلوات في الكنائس (بالميكريفونات) يومية، ويوجد عظة كل مساء كل يوم في جميع الكنائس الحبشية من الخامسة مساءً لمدة ساعتين تقريباً، والصلوات تبدأ في الفجر من الثانية أو الثالثة فجراً حتى العاشرة من الصباح.. وفي الجوامع الأذان بالميكروفون بالطبع في مواعيده بداية من الخامسة فجراً..
This has got nothing to do with me not knowing the Amharic Language, in Egypt I know Arabic, and the sounds get vexing many times.. And has got nothing with religion, as I am here talking about Churches! Noise is noise from any source!!
الأمر لا علاقة له باللغة بأنني لا أفهم الأمهرية، فأنا في مصر أعرف العربية ويكون الصوت متعِب في أحيان كثيرة.. ولا علاقة له بالدين، فأنا هنا أتحدث عن كنائس! فالضوضاء ضوضاء من أي مصدر!!
But the good thing is that you don’t find Churches and Mosques built near each other.. Or at least not intentionally!
ولكن الأمر المحمود أنك لا تجد الكنائس والجوامع مبنية مجاورة لبعضها البعض.. على الأقل ليس عن قصد!
I noticed also that when you talk to someone, if he/she asked about my religion, I tell them “Christian”, they tell me: Then how come you don’t wear a cross?! As if religion is limited in clothes or symbols! Not degrading of symbols, but just to stress on the point that it is not religion, but merely part of it. So I show them a Holy Cross tattoo on my hand..
لاحظت أيضاً أنه عندما تتحدث مع أحد، إذا سأل عن الدين، فأخبره: "مسيحي"، فيقول لي: "فكيف لا ترتدي صليباً"؟! وكأن الدين ينحصر في مجرد ملابس أو رموز فقط! ليس إقلالاً من الرموز، ولكن توضيحاً لأن هذه ليست هي الدين، بل مجرد جزء منه. فأريه وشم على شكل صليب على يدي..
Same funny thing happens with Pope Shenouda III when someone asks His Holiness on the reason He doesn’t have a Cross tattoo on his wrist?! Although the Cross is on His clothes, crown, monks’ head cap, yet It is the center of His whole life, service and rank..
كما يحدث أحياناً مع قداسة البابا شنوده الثالث عندما يسأله البعض عن سبب عدم وجود وشم صليب على يده (المعصم الأيمن)؟! والصليب موجود على كل ملابسه، وتاجه، وقلنسوته، بل الصليب هو محور كل حياته وخدمته ورتبته..
