69) The Ethiopian Church of St. Taklahimanout

 كنيسة الأنبا تكلا هيمانوت الإثيوبية

 

I did that indeed, and arrived back at the church at 11:00 p. m., where I found that the celebration had already started..  I got into the church, and was so happy to see many icons for Saint Taklehaimanot in various sizes..  The church was magnificent, and one of the most beautiful Churches I had seen in Addis Ababa, and it looked like it was more than 200 years old..  I started taking pictures, and I had my permission ready for anyone, and to my surprise, it was the first time ever no one objected to me taking pictures..  Although the permission was still in my pocket, and hadn't shown it to anyone yet!  Then I stood beside the Choir, and started listening and enjoying the beautiful chants they were chanting..  Then the head of the Choir called me to come, and told me in Amharic to stand with them, I did, and someone gave me a stick, and a musical instrument that makes a sound like the Coptic Cymbal called “Cestrum”, and pointed to me to imitate their movements while using this tool..  I started, and I blended in easily..  Then I took some more shots for the festival and the attendants, taking that I would come back one morning to photograph the church building and its magnificent icons..  After that I spent about two hours in the evening of the celebration of Saint Taklehaimanot..  It was so nice..  I wished then that I had a Video Camera to record this magnificent harmony, of deep chanting and this spirituality that showed on the faces of everyone..

وبالفعل، عدت إلى الكنيسة الساعة الحادية عشر مساءً، وكانت الاحتفالية والصلاة قد بدأت..  ودخلت الكنيسة، وفرحت جداً عندما وجدت صور القديس تكلاهيمانوت بأحجام مختلفة..  الكنيسة أكثر من رائعة، وهي من أجمل الكنائس التي رأيتها في أديس أبابا، ويبدو أن عمرها أكثر من مائتي عام..  وبدأت في أخذ بعض الصور، وكنت قد أحضرت معي التصريح الخاص بإيبارشية أديس أبابا، ولدهشتي -ولأول مرة- لم يعترض أحد على أن أقوم بالتصوير..  على الرغم من أن التصريح كان ما يزال في جيبي ولم أريه لأحد بعد!  ثم وقفت بجانب الجوقة التي ترنم، وأنا أستمع وأستمتع بالألحان التي ينشدونها..  ثم أشار لي كبير المرنمين أن آتي، فذهبت إليه، وقال لي بالأمهرية أن أقف ضمن صفوف المرنمين، فوقفت، فأعطاني أحدهم عصا، وآلة تخرج صوتاً مثل الدف القبطي، واسمها سيسترام، وقيل لي أن أقوم بعمل المثل كما يعملون من حركات واستخدام الأداة الموسيقية..  وبدأت بالفعل، واندمجت في الجو المحيط..  ثم أخذت بضعة صور للاحتفال والحاضرين، على أن آتي مرة أخرى صباح أحد الأيام لتصوير الكنيسة كمبنى وأيقوناتها الرائعة..  بعد هذا قضيت حوالي الساعتين في السهرة الخاصة بالقديس تكلاهيمانوت..  وكانت ممتعة جداً..  وتمنيت ساعتها لو كان معي كاميرا فيديو لتصوير هذا الانسجام الرائع، والألحان العميقة، والروحانية التي تبدو على وجوه الجميع..
