68) The Eve of the Feast of St. Teklahimanout in His Church in Addis Ababa

 عشية عيد القديس تكلا هيمانوت في كنيسته بأديس أبابا

 

It was now 5:30 p. m., and there was a storm on the way..  He told me: "You still have a chance..  You have two options: You go now to Debre Libanos to attend the prayers that start from today, and continue till tomorrow.  Or you attend the prayers today at Saint Taklehaimanot Church in Addis Ababa, and wake up early tomorrow to go to the Monastery"..  I told him that I was ready to go that moment to the Monastery, I'd just go to the residence to leave the computer and get a jacket and what I might need there..  He told me that by that time I would be too late to go to the Bus Station, there might not be any busses that go at that time, and if I did go it will be dark, and that is not good, and there I have to be very careful for my belongings..  etc.  I was determined to go at that moment, regardless of the possible hazards he had mentioned..

كانت الساعة الآن الخامسة والنصف، وكان يبدو أن عاصفة على وشك البدء..  فقال لي: "مازال هناك فرصة..  أمامك حل من إثنان: إما أن تذهب الآن إلى دير ديبرا ليبانوس لحضور الصلوات التي تبدأ من اليوم متواصلة حتى اليوم التالي.  أو تذهب اليوم إلى الاحتفال بكنيسة القديس تكلاهيمانوت في أديس أبابا، وتصحو مبكراً غداً للذهاب إلى الدير"..  فأخبرته أنني على استعداد أن أذهب الآن للدير، فقط سوف أذهب للمسكن لأترك الكمبيوتر وأحضر جاكيت وما قد أحتاجه هناك..  فقال لي أنه عندما أذهب للمسكن، وأعود للذهاب لمحطة الأتوبيس التي تذهب للدير سيكون الوقت متأخراً جداً، وقد لا يكون هناك أتوبيسات تذهب في هذا الموعد، وأيضاً إذا ذهبت سيكون الظلام قد حل وهذا غير مناسب، وهناك ينبغي أن أكون حريصاً على متعلقاتي الشخصية.. إلخ.  فأبديت إصراري على الذهاب، غير عابئ بما أشار إليه من أخطار محتملة..

 

I went to the residence and packed a small bag.  Outside the rain had started, it was 6:30 p. m. when I got to the Bus Station, and raining heavily in a way I haven’t seen here before!  It was already dark because of the thick clouds..  What was worse was that there were still no electric power!!  I took a shed from the rain under a building till my eyes got used to the dark..  Then I asked someone about the Bus Stop, he pointed at it a few blocks away..  It was not easy due to the heavy rain..  When I was about to go he asked me where was I heading to, I told him: "Debre Libanos"..  He said: “Yellam”, which means “nothing”.  There are no scheduled busses to go there now, go in the morning..  I thanked him, and got into a microbus heading to Saint Taklehaimanot Ethiopian Tewahido Church in “Taklehaimanot Square” in Addis Ababa.  I did postpone my visit to this church till I get the permission from the Patriarchate, and I didn’t get the chance to go there till that time..

وذهبت للمسكن وجهزت شنطة صغيرة، وخرجت، وقد كان المطر قد بدأ، وكانت الساعة السادسة والنصف عندما وصلت إلى محطة الأتوبيس، وكان المطر على أشده، بصورة كبيرة لم أرها هنا من قبل!  وكان الظلام قد حل بالفعل بسبب الغيوم الكثيفة..  وما زاد الأمر تعقيداً، هو أن التيار الكهربائي كان ما يزال منفصلاً!!  واستترت تحت إحدى المباني من المطر، حتى تعتاد عيناي على الظلام..  ثم سألت أحد الأشخاص عن محطة الأتوبيس، وأشار إليها على بُعد بضعة مبان..  وكان الأمر عسيراً، لأن المطر كان قوياً جداً..  وعندما هممت بالذهاب عدواً، سألني عن وجهتي، فأخبرته: ديبرا ليبانوس..  فقال لي: "يلليم"، أي "مفيش".  فقد انتهى موعد الأتوبيسات، اذهب في الصباح..  شكرته، ثم ذهبت إلى إحدى الميكروباصات متوجهاً إلى كنيسة القديس تكلاهيمانوت في حي اسمه "تكلا هيمانوت" في أديس أبابا.  وكنت قد أرجأت الذهاب إلى هذه الكنيسة إلى بعد أن أحصل على تصريح البطريركية، ولم تتوفر الفرصة للذهاب إليها حتى ذلك الحين.

When I arrived at the Church, and it was still raining heavily even for more than two hours nonstop..  I couldn’t see where was I?  Or where was the entrance to the Church, and there were no shed from the rain..  I asked someone about it, and ran towards it, I got all wet, along with the bag and what’s in it..  At the gates of the church I spent about two minutes trying to convince the doorkeeper to get in!!  Don’t know why!  When I got in, I found the church closed, no electric power, and I felt that I was catching cold again..  I rested a bit at the door of the church till the rain got less.  Then I headed back to the residence to leave the bag, change, and have something to eat..  In order to come back after the electric power returned and after the rain.

وعندما وصلت الكنيسة، وكان المطر ما يزال منذ حوالي الساعتين بصورة لم تنقطع، ومتزايدة في الحدة..  ونزلت من الميكروباص، ولم أرَ أين أنا، ولا أين مدخل الكنيسة، ولم يكن هناك ما يقي من المطر..  فسألت أحد المارة عن مدخل الكنيسة، وجريت إليه، وقد ابتلت ملابسي تماماً، ومعها الحقيبة ومتعلقاتي..  وعلى باب الكنيسة، قضيت حوالي دقيقتين في المطر أقنع البواب أن أدخل!!  لا أعرف لماذا!  وعندما دخلت، وجدت الكنيسة مغلقة، ولا يوجد تيار كهربائي، وبدأت أشعر بدور برد جديد على الأبواب..  فاسترحت قليلاً على باب الكنيسة حتى هدأ المطر.  ثم عدت للمسكن مرة أخرى لأترك الحقيبة وأقوم بتغيير ملابسي وتناول العشاء..  على أن أعود بعد عودة التيار الكهربائي وانتهاء المطر..
